Key ideas

Revenue
What the business takes in before expenses — not what it keeps.
Profit
What is left after expenses, which is what actually services a payment.
Debt service
The recurring payments a business owes on its borrowing.
Why the share matters
A payment that takes a large share of revenue leaves little cushion for a slow month.

Frequently asked questions

What does payment-as-a-share-of-revenue tell me?
It shows how much of each month of revenue is already committed before anything else is paid. A smaller share generally leaves more room for operating costs.
Where do the affordability bands come from?
They are educational reference points chosen for this first version, and we expect to revisit them. They are not drawn from any lender's underwriting standards.
Are these the requirements a lender would use?
No. Every lender sets its own criteria and looks at far more than one ratio, including time in business, cash-flow history, and collateral.
Does this include fees or factor rates?
No. It models simple amortization on the amount, rate, and term entered. Merchant advances and factor-rate products work very differently.
